Every computer running TCP/IP needs an IP address. This address has to be unique inside a subnet. But it is not unique regarding all computers: For example the IP address 192.168.1.1 often is used for small networks. In a server environment it is the IP of the server, in a single user installation it is the IP of the PC.
Pros/Cons
+ Works in single user and network environment
+ Ideal for a server with an static IP address
- Only Unique in a subnet, not unique worldwide
- See considerations above with dial-up connections
- Allows several installations on the same machine.
